Volker Hildebrandt, a German media artist born in 1953, created the artwork “Hepburn” in 2002 as part of his “Goddesses” series. This series is a graphic cycle consisting of 16 different prints, each dedicated to one of the great international divas of film history. Audrey Hepburn is featured as one of these “Goddesses” alongside other iconic actresses such as Brigitte Bardot, Marlene Dietrich, and Marilyn Monroe.
The printed area measures 40 x 40 cm (approx. 15.5 x 15.5 inches) on 50 x 50 cm paper (which we trimmed down a little to a narrow elegant white border around the printed area, and mounted it floating in a gold-painted wooden object frame). The edition is limited to 100 offset lithographic prints, of which only 40 were signed and numbered. This is an unnumbered print from the remaining 60. The handmade frame from spruce and pine wood measures 50.8 x 50.8 x 4.5 cm (20 x 20 x 1.8 inches).
Hildebrandt’s work examines the structure and production of media images, with a focus on the perception of media icons from film, art, sports, and politics. “Goddesses” presents movie stars as cultural icons and explores their multifaceted image in a sequential arrangement. Hildebrandt’s artistic practice includes graphics, painting, video, multimedia, object art, and drawing.
