Peter Stämpfli is a Swiss artist who has gained renown for his focus on car tyres and Pop Art themes. He was born in 1937 in Deisswil, Switzerland. He studied art in Biel and Bern before moving to Paris in 1959, where he became part of the city’s art community. At the outset of his career, Stämpfli drew inspiration from American Abstract Expressionism. However, he rapidly transitioned towards incorporating imagery derived from advertising and popular culture.
In the 1960s, Stämpfli began to concentrate on the automobile, and by the 1970s, he had shifted the focus almost exclusively to car tyres and tyre treads. His paintings and sculptures frequently depict close-up, abstracted views of these everyday objects, reflecting the influence of Pop Art and consumer society. Stämpfli’s work has been exhibited internationally and is included in renowned collections such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. He lives and works in Paris and Sitges, Spain.
