Munich-based photographer Denis Pernath captures cult cinema icon Udo Kier in this striking portrait. Kier became legendary through his theatrical performances in Andy Warhol’s Factory productions in the early 1970s, establishing himself as a distinctive character actor. Denis Pernath’s expert approach to staged photography brings a contemporary perspective to documenting this cinematic legend, creating a meeting point between Kier’s Warhol Factory legacy and modern photographic portraiture.

Udo Kier became famous in connection with Andy Warhol and the Factory primarily through his starring roles in two cult horror films: “Flesh for Frankenstein” (1973) and “Blood for Dracula” (1974), both written and directed by Paul Morrissey. These films were released in the United States as “Andy Warhol’s Frankenstein” and “Andy Warhol’s Dracula”, capitalizing on Warhol’s name for marketing purposes. The films were shot back-to-back at Rome’s Cinecittà studios and “represent a bizarre conjunction of Euro Horror, the spirit of Warhol’s Factory, and the sensibility of director Paul Morrissey”. In these films, Kier delivered memorably over-the-top performances as the titular monsters. As Baron Frankenstein, he played a character who “dreams of restoring Serbia to glory” by building male and female monsters to create a new master race. His theatrical, campy delivery became legendary among cult film fans. The films featured “Factory regular Joe Dallesandro alongside acclaimed character actor Udo Kier”, and while Morrissey maintained that the films he made under the Factory had nothing to do with Warhol himself, the association with Warhol’s name and the Factory’s artistic sensibilities helped establish Kier’s reputation in both arthouse and grindhouse cinema circles. These Warhol-associated films became Kier’s breakthrough roles, launching his career as a distinctive character actor who would go on to work with directors like Fassbinder, Lars von Trier, and many others throughout his long career.
