It was Swiss art dealer Bruno Bischofberger who introduced Jean-Michel Basquiat to Andy Warhol. The fascination was mutual. The young, wild painter and the established art world star began frequenting each other’s company, usually at Warhol’s place. Eventually, at Bischofberger’s urging, they began collaborating. Their early joint work included the Italian painter Francesco Clemente, and Bischofberger promptly sold a series of pieces by the three artists. After Clemente moved on, Basquiat and Warhol continued working together. Since both artists worked quickly, they produced a considerable body of collaborative artwork.
