“American Realities” is a photographic exploration of American life, focusing on themes of poverty and resilience, and the everyday experiences of people who are often overlooked by mainstream narratives. Accompanying Eskildsen’s images are essays and interviews that provide context and personal stories, deepening the viewer’s understanding of the subjects.

Joakim Eskildsen is a Danish photographer renowned for his poetic documentary style. He travelled through states such as New York, California, Louisiana, South Dakota and Georgia, capturing intimate portraits and scenes of families, workers and communities facing hardship and change.
From publisher Steidl’s website: “The people Eskildsen has portrayed — those who struggle to make ends meet, who have lost their jobs or homes and often live in unhealthy conditions—usually remain invisible in a society to which the myth of the American Dream still remains strong. Many of Eskildsen’s subjects hold there is no such dream anymore — merely the American Reality.”

American Realities is a 144-page hardcover measuring 9.5 x 11.8 inches (24 x 30 cm). Language English. ISBN: 978-3958291046. The book features the high-quality printing and binding typical of Steidl’s photobooks.
