Deborah Azzopardi – Sshh & Slam Diptych

Celebrated for iconic works like Sshh and Slam, Deborah Azzopardi explores the humor and intensity of modern relationships. These two large prints measure 69 x 49 cm (27.2 x 19.3 inches); framed 71 x 51 x 4.5 cm (28 x 20 x 1.8 inches).

Deborah Azzopardi brings a distinctly feminine touch to the Pop Art genre, borrowing from the visual language of male icons like Warhol and Lichtenstein while forging a style all her own. Based in London, Azzopardi began her career in commercial art with clients such as Disney, but after surviving a life-threatening illness, she shifted her focus entirely to painting. Her philosophy is simple yet profound: “Life’s short, and if you do what you love, then everything else will eventually fall into place.”
Azzopardi’s work draws inspiration from the vibrant drama of everyday life, capturing fleeting moments with Mediterranean emotional intensity. Her celebrated paintings delve into the comedy and complexity of on-off relationships, seductions, fantasies, and the dramatic situations that everyone encounters—moments we all enjoy and sometimes dread. Each canvas is an invitation to live life to the fullest.
Azzopardi’s impact on contemporary Pop Art was celebrated in her 35th anniversary retrospective exhibition in 2020. Art critic Estelle Lovatt remarked: “America has Lichtenstein; we have Azzopardi. […] Sometimes you just want to curl up under a blanket. With a good book. A piece of chocolate. A man. This is what Deborah Azzopardi’s pictures make me feel like doing.”

Her iconic pieces “Sshh” and “Slam” are at the heart of her oeuvre. These two prints, with a visible area of 69 x 49 cm (27.2 x 19.3 inches), are framed at 71 x 51 x 4.5 cm (28 x 20 x 1.8 inches). For more about the artist and her work, visit deborahazzopardi.co.uk.
