The 7″ vinyl picture disc that comes with “Brain Activity” contains an exclusive audio recording by David Shrigley himself. As we have not played it, we can only speculate as to what is on it. It is likely to feature Shrigley’s own work, probably in the same existential-comic, deadpan style that characterises his art and writing. The Brooklyn Rail notes that there is even a 7″ record enclosed “if you like his singing”, suggesting that the record includes Shrigley performing — possibly singing or reciting in his signature absurdist tone. Anyhow, the record is intended to complement the book’s overview of Shrigley’s career and sensibility.
David Shrigley was born in Macclesfield, England, in 1968. He is renowned for his deadpan humour and his distinctive, childlike drawing style. He studied Environmental Art at the Glasgow School of Art. Having worked in Glasgow and Brighton, his practice spans drawing, sculpture, animation, painting, photography and music. He was nominated for the Turner Prize in 2013 and was awarded an Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2020. His work is held in collections worldwide and he is well known for his gallery exhibitions, as well as for his contributions to popular culture, including music videos and public art.
“Brain Activity” is a hardcover with attached picture-disc, published by Hayward Gallery (ISBN 978-1853322976) in 2012 in English on 188 pages. The book measures 10.5 x 8 inches (26.7 x 20.3 cm). It is in very good condition, with only very little damage to the lower part of the record sleeve, which we have fixed with archival quality transparent tape.
