Bernard Plossu – Western Colors

This collection reveals a lesser-known aspect of Bernard Plossu’s work: The documentation of the American Southwest in color during the 1970s and early 1980s, when he lived in the United States.

Bernard Plossu has spent over 50 years photographing landscapes around the world, but his time in America produced some of his most evocative work. These 88 color photographs, many previously unpublished, capture an unmistakably American landscape of motels and rodeos, deserts and highways. What makes Western Colors special is its use of the rare Fresson printing process, invented in 1899 by Theodore Henri Fresson. The texture and subtle rendering of this pigmentary process answers Plossu’s vision, keeping away from the spectacular while maintaining an intimate and sensory approach to the world.

This 144-page hardcover book, published by Thames & Hudson in 2017, measures 11 x 8.9 inches (28 x 22.5 cm). Our copy is still wrapped in its original foil (we have a reading copy). In English, ISBN 978-0500544679.
